Choosing The Right Burglar Alarm Systems
More and more people are opting to use burglar alarm systems for their homes. We always want our homes and families to be safe. And in a hard economy, we feel the need even more. There are several companies to choose from and many features to look into.
A full package generally includes activation of the alarm in cases of break-in, fire and motion detection. Alarm systems have been around long enough that you should be able to find one that is simple to use and understand.
So, how do these alarms work? First, your home is inspected and a quote on price is given. Number of doors and windows among other things is taken into account. After you select a company, a technician will come to do the install. All windows and doors are wired and sensors are added. It is all connected to a main terminal and linked to your phone line. It is through the phone line that the security company is notified of trouble.
Typically, entrances and exits are ‘allowed’ through the front door and the garage door only. First you set the alarm. Then you will be given a certain amount of time to leave and close the door behind you. When you enter, you must use one of these 2 doors. You will be given the same amount of time to shut of the system, by entering a code. 30-90 seconds should be enough time. When deciding on the time allotment, take into account things like location of the control panel, navigating through darkness, etc.
Coming in a different door will trigger the alarm and even if you then enter the code, the company will be notified. They will then ask you for your ‘password’ which is given during set-up. Do use a code you can remember. If you forget it, usually the police will probably be called and sent over to check things out.
That’s all there is to it. Those are the basics. You may also want to consider motion detectors. This offers further protection. Sensors are placed throughout the home and any motion will activate the system. This feature can be shut off at night while or any time you have the alarm on but are at home. You will also want it off if you have pets that could set it off.
Most systems now include a fire alarm. The fire department will be notified in the case of fires. There will often be a button that you can press yourself if you happen to be home and a fire starts. A similar button may also be included for contacting the police directly. This could be used if you are home, the alarm is not set and somebody enters the house, or for any other emergency where you want to contact the police immediately.
There are different packages and price levels. If you are going to invest in burglar alarm systems, it may be a good idea to go all out and get all the features. The incremental costs are usually low and since protecting your house is the goal, you will feel and be safer with full coverage.
