Minneapolis Garage Door Repair How To’s

Garage doors are made from a variety of materials including fiberglass, wood and metal. These doors can be plain or decorative. Regardless of what style they are, having good springs is what makes them work. According to minneapolis Garage Door Repair specialists, any time a garage door is worked on, the individual should always watch out for the springs. A quick release of these springs can cause an injury.

Cables and springs, on garage doors, will eventually start to stretch due to use. This creates a safety hazard as the door becomes out of balance. The normal issue is that it closes too fast which is a hazard to anything that might be in its way. The door may also open too fast which damages the door and can hurt a shoulder. A door that is balanced right will remain in the same position when opened by three or four feet. Garage doors should open and close easily. If it bounces back up or slams to the ground, the tension in the springs needs to be altered.

Use the steps below to help with adjusting the door properly.

1.) Open the garage door to create a three to four foot opening. Move the door up and down until a spot is found where the door remains in position. If the location is more than four feet off the ground, adjustments need to be made.

2.) To make it easier and safer to work on the door, hold the door open using a ladder or C clamps. This will keep it from closing on you while you work and also lessens the tension on the springs.

3.) The spring should be completely compressed and then taken out of the track. Relocate the spring to the next higher hole if the door was closing too quickly. Relocate it to the next lower hole if it opened to quickly. Make sure to relocate the spring on the other side as well and retest the door.

4.) Using a level, make sure that both sides of the door are even when it closes. If not, readjust the springs.

5.) Minute fixes may be required. If this is the case, made adjustments to the cable and not the springs. Since the cables are joined to the door by S springs that are attached to the track support, the S spring will have to be removed. The cable may need to be tightened or loosened depending on the problem.

It is not a bad idea also to have help when doing any type of garage door work. Not only can an extra pair of eyes and hands give you additional ideas, they can also help you prevent injury. I had a garage door that needed to be adjusted, it had no automatic opener and it would slam shut way too fast. The homeowner tried to work on it and got injured because he was all alone. It is always a good idea in my opinion to have 2 people working on things. However some contractors may want to save money by only sending one person out to a certain job, or just don’t think it may require two people. There are 2 schools of thought on that I guess you could say.
